Throughout all of his life Sena was always known for taking the easy, less stressful ways through life. When he was younger, he was oftentimes a target for bullies because of the timid nature he has. And to ensure that he would avoid the non-violent, most least humiliating ways out of the confrontations he would go through, he thought it would be better to put up and deal with the requests and errands they would make him run. In fact when he first thinks about joining the football team in his high school he wanted to join as the manager, but somehow managed to get himself roped into playing running back. He also didn’t want to see his childhood friend, Mamori Anezaki, get dragged in to bail him out of the situations he found himself in.
Which brings me to my next point, Sena never really had anything he could claim that he did, or decided to do on his own. He always played it safe and always took the easy way out of things. It also probably didn’t help the fact that he had Mamori looking out for him as well, making sure that he was always safe and kept out of harms way. (In fact when she finds out that he’s Eyeshield 21 she kind of freaks out) So when he gets into high school and gets bombarded by Hiruma’s and Kurita’s request to join the football team, he truly does consider the offer for a brief second. It takes him a while to mull the idea over, but he joins the team on his own violation. And when he finally gets to play in an actual game with actual challenges, he not only discovers that he had actually enjoyed it, but he also finds that it was really fun playing it as well. It was his very first decision that he made on his own and for once it didn’t end horribly or him being in incredible pain… well, no, okay. He still was in pain at the end of the game. But at least it was an enjoyable pain, and it didn’t involve him being beaten to a pulp. Sena isn’t the loud or boastful type either, in fact he never views himself as a strong player and always sees the other players to be stronger than him. When he does have those moments when his confidence shines through though, but they typically only seem to last for a couple of seconds before he fizzles out and trails off awkwardly to an end. He’s also easily intimidated and oftentimes finds himself cowering under the gaze of equally strong and scary looking people. But, despite his quiet nature, Sena does have his moments of seriousness though and can be insanely protective and fierce over his friends. He isn’t the type who condones violence and has always avoided it throughout his life, in fact he’s ever rarely seen angry. But he absolutely can not stand listening to someone rag on his friends and their dreams. It’s almost like another part of himself awakens whenever he hears something like this. And when he’s determined to put his mind to something he will definitely give it his all and see it to the end as best as he can. Carrying the moniker of Eyeshield 21 around was a bit stressful for him as well. Mostly because Hiruma kept spouting all these lies about “him” and things just sort of snowballed to him being this supposedly God send of a player. It was like he had an expectation to meet up to and it made him a bit uncomfortable at times, he especially hated it whenever the lies grew as well. But it especially bothered him the moment that he found out that Eyeshield 21 was an actual person who really did play in the states for a while. Coming clean to his team and friends was especially hard too. Only a few people were able to guess right off the bat that Sena was Eyeshield 21. (Those people being Monta, Shin, and Juumonji. Hiruma and Kurita were there from the start) So when he told the other members on his team they freaked out. And the reason why he had put off telling Mamori for so long was because he didn’t want to be forced to stop playing a sport he has come to love so much. If Mamori knew that he was Eyeshield she would go to Hiruma himself and demand that Sena stop playing. But in the end he felt instantly better about it since he wasn’t having to live up to the fake expectations that Hiruma made up and spread to the media. Sena didn’t have a ton of friends before he got into football. In fact the only people he really considered was Mamori Anezaki, a girl who lived in his neighborhood and Riku Kaitani. Sena views Mamori as the big sister he never had since she’s mostly seen taking care of him and making sure that he was alright. It was kind of motherly too, if you think about it… But he tries his hardest to do his best for her and to make her proud of him at the end of it all. Riku was a kid he had befriended in elementary school. He was the one who taught Sena how to run effectively in an attempt to help the other put an end to the bullies that picked on him in school. It… obviously didn’t turn out the way that Riku wanted since Sena mostly uses the technique to help run around doing things for said bullies, but it was the thought that counted in the end. Riku ended up having to move away due to his dad being relocated. But they do run into each other again on the field and manage to pick up their friendship right where they had left off at. He also manages to learn another valuable lesson from Riku as well in that it’s okay to get banged up on the field every once in a while. If he can let his body shield the ball and further his team down the field closer to the end zone then he’d do it till his body breaks. Another important relationship to bring up would be his rivalry with Shin. To Sena Shin has always been an unstoppable power house. Someone who’s leagues beyond him in skill and natural raw talent. But he finds himself having more interest in playing football whenever he’s playing against Shin. He’s fast and has an unstoppable block and every time he finds himself being knocked down by Shin he manages to get right back up. They push and pull each other to get better and even when Sena thinks he’s gotten strong enough to take Shin on, the other manages to surprise him. But at the end of the day he respects Shin and admires the other players skill’s. quote #3.
Sena’s greatest strength and talent mostly relies on his agility and speed. But he’s always been a fast runner; ever since he was a child he was always running around and doing things for bullies. Such as getting their bags or running to convenient marts to get them snacks, and things like that. He has also been very good at making sharp turns and cuts from the very beginning as well. So when he does manage to get coerced into joining the team he started off only being able to run a 40 yard dash between 5 and 4.2 seconds. And that was mostly due to the fact that Cerberos (a dog who mostly views the rest of the Devil Bat team as food) was chasing after him. Which is exactly why he was told that he could only run that fast once per game. This changes as time goes on, obviously, but he’s still limited to how many times he can run it though, thanks to the unwanted stress it puts on his legs.
Outside of his incredible speed, Sena is pretty scrawny kid. So he can’t really rely on brute strength to get him through most of his games. In fact when he first started he couldn’t even bench press the same as an average male could normally do. It took him almost 200 chapters for him to be able to finally be able to bench press the average weight a person his age should be able to. Sena is the type of player who improves after every time he plays in every practice, game, and intensive strength training. His first intense training took place while he was traipsing from Houston, Texas to Las Vegas, Nevada. It was dubbed as the Death March and promised him and his teammates the power they would need to have in order to get to the Christmas Bowl. His training mostly had him kicking a rock without losing sight of it, and if he did lose sight of it, he would have to start back from the beginning. It was during the Death March where he was able to learn his first technique called the Devil Bat Ghost. This technique allows the user to shorten their steps by stepping in one direction and then crossing over the other foot, thus causing the linebacker to be unsure of which direction they will run towards. The sub-techniques could be listed into three different categories. The first category shall be the Dive category. The Devil Bat Dive is a move where Sena rushes toward the scrimmage line at top speed and jumps over the opposing linemen in an attempt to score a touchdown. Just like his 40 yard dash in 4.2 seconds, he was also initially told to only do this move once or twice in a game since it could cause some serious injury to Sena. This move is typically used whenever a play is started just outside of the end zone. We then have the Sky Devil Bat Drive which is a move Sena uses when he makes a fast reversal, and jumps up to catch the ball in the air. There’s also the Double Devil Bat Dive which is the exact same thing as the Devil Bat Dive, except he’s joined with Raimon Monta and can pass the ball to him in midair. The Fake Devil Bat Dive usually involves Sena jumping over the opposing team while pretending he has the ball. It’s used to trick the other team by making them try to stop his charge while the person who is actually carrying the ball gets through. There’s also the One Man Devil Bat Dive which is a technique he uses when he jumps over the single defender in a direct confrontation. The last technique he has developed this far is the Cerberus Dive and that is a technique that allows him and three other players to dive forward while only one player carries the ball. The second category shall be the Spin category. The Devil Bat Hurricane is very similar to the Devil Bat Ghost, but instead it allows him to bypass his opponents by putting a spin on it. So instead of cutting across his opponent, he spins around them. Theres also the Devil Light Hurricane which is basically the same technique as the Devil Bath Hurricane, but lets him combine his speed as well. The third and final category will be the Stiff-Arm category. The stiff arm is a normal defensive move used to keep opposing players at a distance. By sacrificing the ball safety, Sena can use his free arm to push off a player from an opposing team. The only other move we’ve seen Sena pull off somewhat effectively is the Devil Stungun. This move sacrifices the ball’s safety (again) for a chance to break through. Unlike the basic stiff-arm, this also involves a jabbing motion as well. Besides this, Sena has amazing foresight. This is something he’s had before he was in football since we first see Sena mapping out different openings he could use to his advantage to dodge bullies. The main weakness this has is that he can’t actually anticipate any moves of an incoming opponent if they are moving at the same fast pace that he is. There’s only one move he can do with this at the moment, and that would be the Scramble and Pass. The scramble and pass allows Sena to take the ball after the snap and rush towards the sides and then make a pass to anyone he can. Also I don't know if this is.... particularly special or not to bring up, but, Sena has an incredible imagination on and off the field. He also has impeccable balance and is able to run across railings, even managing to still be able to do so while being incredibly intoxicated. He can dodge things pretty well too, as he's seen avoiding getting hit by things that are thrown at him. imagine dragon song
